Summitting El Capitan
Remember Alex Honnold from Stacy Peralta’s work for North Face, “Question Madness”? He’s kept his grip on that question! Jimmy Chin and Chai Vasarhelyi of Nonfiction, who know the ropes of climbing as seen in their work on Meru, captured Honnold’s history-in-the-making 3000-foot climb up Yosemite’s treacherous and famous granite wall: El Capitan. It’s been done before, but not without a rope! Yes, Honnold took on a climb with no safety gear. Beyond the typical mental and physical stress of the more than half-mile vertical climb, Honnold had to conquer the added fear of a possible fall…to his death. Jimmy and Chai captured his entire experience, an astonishingly quick 3 hours and 56 minutes, for an upcoming National Geographic Documentary series.
