Diane Martel + Katy Perry + iHeartRadio = Subversive Insanity

What’s got an orange glow, and sits in a high tower, finger on the button, letting the gears spin ever in his favor? That big hamster in Katy Perry’s iHeartRadio opening performance. Family Member Hound’s Diane Martel killed it last night on the creative direction. While keeping that poppy, hit-factory vibe of Perry’s “Chained to the Rhythm,” Martel let the songs true, subversive colors paint the walls with blue skies and cogwheel clouds. Her fantastically creative mind brought Perry’s song into physical form: it gives you a smile and makes your head bob and makes you want to get up and dance and sing along, and yet it so clearly displays a human on a hamster wheel. It’s a pleasant dream begging you to wake up. So what’s orange, soft-skinned, and many Americans wake up facing it every morning? Well, an orange.
